The mute key you find before the meeting does
In a call, Ctrl + Shift + M toggles your microphone and is worth learning before anything else on this page. Its companion is Ctrl + Shift + Space: hold it while muted to speak, release to go silent again — push-to-talk for the one-sentence answer. Ctrl + Shift + O toggles the camera, Ctrl + Shift + H raises and lowers your hand, and incoming calls can be taken or refused with Ctrl + Shift + A and Ctrl + Shift + D without hunting for the buttons.
During the meeting itself, Ctrl + Shift + E starts a screen share, Ctrl + Shift + B toggles the meeting chat pane, and Ctrl + Shift + P shows the participant list — three keys that cover most of what presenters reach for the mouse to do.
Moving through the app
The left rail is numbered: Ctrl + 1 through Ctrl + 6 jump to Activity, Chat, Teams, Calendar, Calls, and Files in that order, and Ctrl + , opens Settings. Ctrl + E focuses the search box at the top of the window, and Ctrl + N starts a new chat. When composing, Shift + Enter inserts a line break so Enter cannot send a half-written thought, Ctrl + Shift + X expands the composer to show the full formatting toolbar, and the familiar Ctrl + B, Ctrl + I, Ctrl + U handle bold, italic, and underline.
Frequently asked questions
Are the shortcuts the same in the browser version?
Mostly, but not always — the browser gets first claim on some Ctrl combinations, so a few chords behave differently than in the desktop app. Inside Teams, press Ctrl + . to open the app's own shortcut list, which reflects exactly what your current version and platform support.
How does push-to-talk work?
While you are muted in a meeting, hold Ctrl + Shift + Space to unmute temporarily and speak; releasing the keys returns you to mute. It is the safest way to interject without forgetting your microphone open afterwards.
Why can't I start a screen share with the shortcut?
Ctrl + Shift + E depends on where Teams is running and what your organisation allows: browser sessions need screen-capture permission from the browser, and admin policies can restrict sharing for some users or meeting types. If the toolbar's share button is missing too, the limitation is the policy, not the key.
What are the macOS equivalents?
Substitute Cmd for Ctrl: Cmd + Shift + M mutes, Cmd + 2 opens Chat, Cmd + E focuses search. Teams keeps the same letters across platforms.
How do I stop Enter from sending messages too early?
Use Shift + Enter for line breaks while drafting, or press Ctrl + Shift + X to expand the composer — in the expanded view the send action moves to Ctrl + Enter, so plain Enter simply adds a new line.
