What is the shortcut to create a component in Figma?
Cmd + Option + K — Create Component
Select the layers and press Cmd + Option + K (Ctrl + Alt + K on Windows) to turn the selection into a main component. Option + 2 jumps from any instance back to that main component.
Components are Figma's reusable building blocks: edit the main component and every instance updates. The command works on any selection - a frame, a group, or several layers, which get wrapped into one component frame.
If you selected several elements meaning to make one component each, that is a separate command: right-click and choose 'Create multiple components'. Instances you drag from the Assets panel can be detached later (Ctrl + Alt + B / Cmd + Option + B) when a one-off needs to diverge.

What becomes a component
The selection — a frame, a group, or several layers — becomes a main component, marked with a purple diamond icon in the layers panel. Everything drawn from it afterwards by copying or by dragging from the Assets panel is an instance, which follows changes to the main and can override text, colours and visibility without breaking the link. Making the main component from a frame rather than a loose group gives it auto layout and constraints from the start.
Variants and properties
Selecting several related components and choosing Combine as variants (in the right panel) merges them into a component set where a property such as State = Default / Hover switches between them; component properties added in the same panel expose booleans, text and instance swaps to whoever uses the component. Naming layers consistently before combining is what makes the properties line up.
Where main components should live
Keep main components on a dedicated page or in a library file and publish it, so instances in other files update through the library rather than by copy-paste. Option + 2 (Alt + 2 on Windows) jumps from any instance to its main component, and Detach instance in the right-click menu breaks the link when an instance needs to diverge for good.
