How do you duplicate in Figma?

Figma · Selection & Editing · updated 2026-08-23

Cmd + D — Duplicate

Press Cmd + D (Ctrl + D on Windows) to duplicate the selected layers in place. Duplicating a frame copies everything inside it, and repeating the shortcut after moving the first copy repeats the offset.

Duplicate in place and with offset

Cmd + D creates the copy exactly on top of the original, so the first thing to do is move it. Figma remembers that move: pressing Cmd + D again after dragging the copy produces another copy at the same offset, which is how a row of evenly spaced cards is laid out in seconds. Option + drag (Alt on Windows) duplicates while moving, and Shift constrains the drag to an axis.

Duplicating frames, pages and files

Duplicating a frame copies everything inside it including nested components and prototype connections between children. Right-click a page tab to duplicate a page, and the file menu duplicates a whole file into your drafts — useful for a scratch copy before a big change. Copies of a component instance stay instances of the same main; copies of a main component become instances too, not new mains.

When duplicating is the wrong tool

For repeated items that should stay in sync, use a component and instances rather than duplicates, and for a grid of items use auto layout with a repeating child. Duplicates drift apart the moment one is edited, which is fine for exploration and painful for a design system.

Duplicating with the keyboard only

Cmd + D followed by Shift + arrow keys moves the copy ten pixels per press, so a vertical stack of eight identical rows is one duplicate, eight nudges, and seven more Cmd + D presses — no mouse at all. Cmd + C and Cmd + V paste at the same position on another page or file, and Cmd + Shift + V pastes to replace the selected layer while keeping its position and size.
