The single most common reason YouTube shortcuts appear broken is focus. The player has to be the focused element for its keys to register, and clicking the video area gives it focus while clicking the page around it does not. Worse, several keys behave differently depending on whether the player or the seek bar specifically holds focus: Space plays and pauses when the seek bar is selected, but acts as a generic activate key if some other button has focus. If a shortcut does nothing, click the middle of the video once and try again.

The seek keys come in three grades. Left and Right on the seek bar move 5 seconds. J and L move 10 seconds and are the pair worth learning, because they work from the player rather than requiring seek-bar focus. Ctrl + Left and Ctrl + Right jump whole chapters on videos that have them. Separately, the number keys are a percentage jump rather than a time jump — 5 goes to the halfway point of the video regardless of its length, and 0 returns to the start.

Frame stepping only works while the video is paused. . advances one frame and , goes back one, which makes them the practical way to read a single frame of text or find an exact edit point. Playback speed is > and < — the shifted comma and period — so the four keys sit next to each other on the keyboard and are easy to confuse in the first week.

A few keys are worth knowing simply because they save a menu dive: C toggles captions, F goes fullscreen, I opens the miniplayer so a video keeps playing while you browse, and / jumps to the site search box from anywhere on YouTube. Shift + N and Shift + P move through a playlist, though Shift + P only functions when you are actually inside one.

This page lists every shortcut in Google's official YouTube keyboard shortcuts article and nothing beyond it. Media keys on keyboards that have them — play/pause, stop, next track — are included because YouTube documents them explicitly. Shortcuts for YouTube Studio, YouTube TV and YouTube Music are documented separately by Google and are not covered here.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my YouTube keyboard shortcuts not working?

The player needs focus. Click once on the middle of the video — not on the page around it, and not on a button — then try the key again. Some shortcuts additionally require the seek bar specifically to be the focused element, which is why Space sometimes activates a button instead of pausing.

How do I go frame by frame on YouTube?

Pause the video first, then press . to advance one frame and , to go back one. Neither key does anything while the video is playing.

How do I change YouTube playback speed with the keyboard?

> speeds the video up and < slows it down, stepping through YouTube's preset speeds. These are the shifted period and comma keys, sitting right next to the frame-stepping keys.

What does pressing a number do on YouTube?

It seeks by percentage, not by seconds. 1 through 9 jump to 10% through 90% of the video's total length, and 0 returns to the beginning. On a ten-minute video 3 lands at three minutes; on a two-hour video it lands at thirty-six minutes.

How do I turn on YouTube captions with the keyboard?

Press C. The same key hides them again. It only has an effect on videos that actually have captions available.

What is the YouTube miniplayer shortcut?

I opens the miniplayer, which shrinks the video into a corner so it keeps playing while you browse the rest of YouTube. Pressing I again returns it to the full page.
