Searching for Civil 3D keyboard shortcuts turns up surprisingly little from Autodesk, and there is a structural reason for that. Civil 3D is not a standalone application — it is a vertical built on the AutoCAD platform. Almost every key combination you press in Civil 3D is an AutoCAD shortcut, documented by Autodesk under AutoCAD rather than under Civil 3D. The page Autodesk's own shortcuts hub labels "Civil 3D shortcuts" covers only the Project Explorer window: eight keys, nothing else.
This page joins the two halves that Autodesk keeps apart. The Project Explorer section is the genuinely Civil-3D-specific set, and it is worth learning first because it has no AutoCAD equivalent — Z zooms the viewport to whatever object you have selected in Project Explorer, P pans to it, and holding Ctrl temporarily highlights it. Those three keys turn Project Explorer from a list into a navigation tool. They also work at sub-object level, so you can zoom straight to a single alignment point, surface triangle, parcel segment or COGO point.
Everything below Project Explorer is the AutoCAD platform set, which behaves identically in Civil 3D. The function keys are the ones that matter day to day because they toggle drafting aids: F3 for object snap, F8 for ortho, F10 for polar tracking, F12 for dynamic input. Most drafting frustration traces back to one of these being in the wrong state, and toggling them from the keyboard is far faster than hunting the status bar.
The numbered Ctrl combinations open palettes rather than performing actions, which is easy to forget. Ctrl + 1 is Properties — the single most-used palette in Civil 3D, since almost all object editing happens there. Ctrl + 3 opens Tool Palettes, Ctrl + 4 Sheet Set Manager, Ctrl + 9 the command line. If your command line has vanished, Ctrl + 9 is the fix.
Two AutoCAD conventions catch people out. Ctrl + C copies to the clipboard as expected, but Ctrl + Shift + C copies with a base point, which is what you almost always want when moving geometry between drawings. And Ctrl + Y is redo, not the cut-paste-history behaviour some other applications use. Note also that shortcut keys are defined in the CUIx customisation file — if someone on your team has customised it, individual keys on this page may be reassigned.

Only a small set. Autodesk documents eight Civil-3D-specific keys, all for the Project Explorer window. Everything else is inherited from the AutoCAD platform that Civil 3D is built on, and is documented by Autodesk under AutoCAD rather than Civil 3D.
Ctrl + 1. It is an AutoCAD platform shortcut and works identically in Civil 3D. Because most Civil 3D object editing happens in Properties, it is the single shortcut worth learning first.
Select the object in the Project Explorer window and press Z to zoom to it, or P to pan to it, in the AutoCAD viewport. Holding Ctrl highlights it temporarily instead. These work at sub-object level too — individual alignment points, surface triangles, parcel segments and COGO points.
F3 toggles object snap, F7 the grid, F8 ortho mode, F9 snap mode, F10 polar tracking, F11 object snap tracking and F12 dynamic input. Most unexpected drafting behaviour comes from one of these being toggled the wrong way.
Yes. Shortcut keys are defined in the CUIx customisation file and can be reassigned through the Customize User Interface editor on the Manage tab. That also means a customised CUIx on a shared workstation can make individual keys on this page behave differently.
Ctrl + C copies the selected objects to the clipboard. Ctrl + Shift + C copies with a base point, which lets you paste the geometry at a precise location — normally what you want when moving objects between drawings.
